On May 3, 2018, Cañon Lodge Care Center in Cañon City, Colorado, was honored to have the Fremont County Extensions of the Scouts and Cub Scouts to the facility to perform a flag retirement ceremony.
Seven residents, including five veterans, got to witness the ceremony. The veterans were presented with grommets of other honorably retired flags as an appreciation for their service. The seven Scouts who attended retired three flags that day, one from Cañon Lodge and two from other locations.
The Scouts recounted the story of the history of Old Glory and burned the flags according to protocol in the half-hour ceremony and concluded with their meeting, which they let the residents attend.
“I thought it was an amazing experience, and we were honored to be a part of it,” said one of the residents. “Those kids really knew what they were doing, and it was outstanding!”
